Do I need a doctor's referral?
No referral needed. We're open to anyone who wants accurate performance and body composition data - from competitive athletes to people just starting their fitness journey.
How accurate is DEXA compared to InBody?
There is no comparison. InBody estimates (often poorly). DEXA measures.
For example, if you're dehydrated, InBody will likely underestimate muscle and overestimate fat. In validation studies, DEXA's error rates in estimating body fat were typically in the 1-2% range whereas InBody was as high as 8%, performing particularly poorly with certain populations (athletes, elderly, obese, etc).

DEXA is the gold standard for body composition measurement, relied on by everyone from clinical researchers to professional sports teams.

DEXA uses low dose X-ray technology to map fat mass, lean tissue, and bone mineral content with high precision. On the other hand, InBody devices (and similar technologies) use bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA), which passes a small electrical current through the body to estimate body composition based on hydration. Unfortunately, this makes it highly susceptible to water intake, resulting in significant measurement inaccuracies based on water and carbohydrate intake, sweat, time of day, body inflammation, etc.
What's the difference between V02 Max testing vs Apple Watch estimate?
Wearables don’t actually measure VO2 max — they infer it from proxy signals like heart rate and pace using population-based algorithms that can be heavily distorted by factors like heat, stress, hydration, and sensor error. A true lab-based test with a mask directly measures oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide exchange breath-by-breath under controlled load, making it the gold standard by orders of magnitude in both precision and physiological relevance.
Are these tests useful if I'm on a GLP-1 like Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, etc?
Yes, measuring your body composition and bone health is especially important for anyone taking GLP-1 medications like Ozempic, Wegovy, or Mounjaro. These medications can be highly effective for weight loss, but the scale alone cannot tell you how much of that weight is coming from fat versus lean muscle mass.

If your goal is healthy, sustainable weight loss, preserving muscle is critical for metabolic health, strength, longevity, and long-term weight maintenance. Regular body composition testing allows you to objectively track fat loss, muscle preservation, and changes in visceral fat over time, while bone density testing helps monitor skeletal health during periods of rapid weight loss.

Pairing these measurements with adequate protein intake and resistance training can dramatically improve the quality of your weight loss by helping bias results toward fat loss rather than muscle loss.
Do I need to be an athlete?
Absolutely not. While the quality of our facility and expertise of our team attract many professional and Olympic athletes, the vast majority of our clients are everyday New Yorkers looking to better understand and improve their health and performance.

We pride ourselves on creating a welcoming, supportive environment for people of all ages, fitness levels, and experience backgrounds. Our staff is friendly, patient, and highly experienced — we’ll never push you beyond your comfort level or make you feel rushed.

When you come to NYC Performance Lab, you can expect an immaculately clean, safe, and encouraging environment where you’ll be cheered on every step of the way.
What do I walk out with?
Unlike most facilities (especially those with "bargain" prices), we don’t simply hand you a report full of numbers and rush you out the door. After your test, we sit down with you one-on-one, offer you a complimentary healthy beverage, and walk through your results in plain English, making sure you fully understand what the data means and have every question answered.

You’ll also receive a detailed follow-up report via email that you can save for your records or share with your physicians, trainers, nutritionists, or other healthcare providers. Our goal is not just to give you data, but to give you clarity, context, and actionable insights you can actually use.
